Humanism  vs Nationalism

The dangerous cult of race and nation:

Humanism and racism will always be at odds.

SGI literature describes the nationalists and racist trends - as being “evil” and a “cult of power worship”.  Discussing SGI humanism, Ikeda refers in his dialogue, The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra, 5, to the “perverse ideology of nationalism” (p.114) and to “the devilish nature of nationalism” (p.139), and describes it as : “Nationalism could be described as a cult of power” (p.105).

History tested nationalists “cult of power”, which - during the II W W – was responsible for the destruction of millions of lives both in Japan and Asia, and which is still cherished in the right-wing thinking of  “supremacists”.  Needless to say, harmonious diversity, global citizenship and humanism of SGI stand at the opposite side of racial hatred, nationalism and also religious fanaticism.

SGI became the most racially diverse Buddhist group in the world - within a relatively short time of historical development - offering a direct proof of the validity of the humanism of its teachings based on Nichiren Buddhism.

Opposition to the “Cult of Power” and “Cult of Person”

The “Cult of the State” and the “Cult of Emperor’s Worship” were overwhelmingly strong trends in Japan, at a time when the Soka Kyoiku Gakkai was at its inception stage. Since its early history, the Soka Gakkai and the cults of power worship were at odds.

When the first founder, Mr. Makiguchi was arrested - at the age of 71 -  by the military authorities as a “thought criminal”, he underwent interrogation during which he manifested an uncompromising spirit against the Cult of Emperor Worship:

“The Emperor is a common mortal…The Emperor himself should not be telling people to be loyal to him. This should be struck from the ‘Imperial Rescript on Education’ …To slander the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren is to invite certain punishment”.

History’s records show the contrast between the Soka Gakkai first founders’ opposition to obedience to the emperor and the militarists, and - on the other hand - other Buddhist groups’ submission to the cult of power, exemplified by Nichiren Shoshu sect’s High Priest announcement (1941) :

Today His majesty declared war….I can hardly suppress my awe and joy at this….”.

Opposition to the “Cult of Personality” – whether the personality is political or religious was also expressed by the SGI’s stand against the “Cult of the High Priest” – rejecting the demand of the priesthood of “Absolute Obedience” to the person of the High Priest.
